Best AI Tools for Architects

The AI tools worth an architect's time at the concept, schematic and documentation stages.
This guide sorts the best AI tools for architects by stage, from concept images to schematic plans to documentation. Each entry says what the tool does, where it runs and what it hands over. It ends with a scorecard for one project and a four-step pilot for bringing one tool into a practice.
The best AI tools for architects work on the architect's own geometry. They run inside the platforms a practice already uses, and they export what consultants need. This guide sorts them by stage, from concept to schematic to documentation. Each entry draws on the maker's own pages, read in October 2026. It ends with a scorecard and a pilot you can run on one project.
How architects are using AI now
The RIBA AI Report 2026 found that 74% of the practices surveyed were using AI, up from 59% in 2025. Most AI tools for architecture stop at the image. The hours are lost later, in plans and documentation. That is why this guide is sorted by stage. AI tools by workflow stage explains the split.
The order inside each stage is not a ranking. Monet makes one tool on this list, so test it like the others.
Concept images and early ideas
Two warnings apply to all five tools. Clients read an image as a promise. And image rights differ by tool and plan.
Midjourney
Midjourney gives mood and range from a text prompt, but no geometry. It suits the first client talk, before there is a model.
Chaos Veras
Veras renders the architect's own model inside Revit, SketchUp, Rhino, Archicad and Vectorworks. It can also turn an image into a short video. It suits a practice that wants options on its own massing.
Archicad AI Visualizer
Graphisoft's AI Visualizer comes with Archicad subscription plans. It turns a sketch, a diagram or a model view into an image, with a choice of three AI engines. It suits Archicad users who want quick ideas from the model view.
SketchUp AI Render
SketchUp AI Render, once called Diffusion, renders a SketchUp model. It takes reference images, inpainting and negative prompts.
Krea
Krea offers a real-time canvas and upscaling across many image models. It suits quick studies of material and light.
Schematic plans and massing that measure
Here the outputs must hold to areas and setbacks. Compare what each tool needs and what it hands over. The list of AI floor plan generators goes deeper on plans.
- Forma Site Design. Needs: Site and massing. Hands over: Analysis results, and early plans for some building types.
- Snaptrude. Needs: Brief or RFP, then massing. Hands over: BIM model, with exports to Revit and Rhino.
- Finch. Needs: Firm standards and local codes. Hands over: Plans, areas and BIM geometry.
- TestFit. Needs: Site and program. Hands over: Layouts pushed to Revit, plus AutoCAD, SketchUp, Excel and PDF exports.
- Hypar. Needs: Program targets for room counts and areas. Hands over: Space plans with live area checks, and a Revit export.
Autodesk Forma Site Design
Forma Site Design runs sun, wind, noise and carbon analysis on early massing in the cloud. It sends a proposal to Revit as a native model. Its Building Layout Explorer is still an experiment. It proposes early floor plans, such as office and multifamily, from a mass.
Snaptrude
Snaptrude turns a brief or RFP into a program, then takes your massing to a BIM model. The program table stays linked, so the model updates when you edit it. It runs in the browser.
Finch
Finch makes plans based on a firm's standards and local codes, with plugins for Rhino, Grasshopper and Revit. Some of its AI plan features are open only to selected customers.
TestFit
TestFit tests whether a site works, parking included, with generated layouts. It suits developers and architects at the feasibility stage.
Hypar
Hypar is space-planning software. You place spaces against program targets and watch live area and count checks. Then you export to Revit. You lay out the plan yourself, so treat it as a planning aid, not a generator.
Documentation, the newest stage
These tools help the drafter. Coordination, details and the stamp stay with the architect. How AI is reshaping production drawings covers the shift.
SWAPP
SWAPP automates construction documents inside Revit and Archicad, such as dimensions, tags, views and sheets. It learns a firm's standards during setup.
Autodesk Assistant in Revit 2027
The assistant launched as a tech preview and runs on the Model Context Protocol. It answers model questions and helps with sheets, views and schedules. Autodesk says it supports a focused set of tasks, not every Revit task.
Autodesk Assistant in AutoCAD 2027
In AutoCAD 2027 the assistant checks drawings against a standards file you upload. It is also a tech preview, and Autodesk warns that mistakes are possible.
Archicad AI Assistant
Graphisoft's AI Assistant is in beta. In Archicad 29 it answers how-to and design questions. In Archicad 30, on some plans, it can also work with the model itself. It needs a subscription and an internet connection.
Interiors and temporary layers
Architects who work inside existing buildings start from someone else's drawing. Event and exhibition layouts work the same way, on the venue's own plan at true scale. AI floor plan generation explains how that is done.
Rayon
Rayon draws interior plans in the browser. Its AI tracing turns a scanned plan into vectors.
Monet
For event and exhibition layouts, Monet builds to scale on the venue's own PDF or DWG. Its plans, elevations and renders all come from that one layout. Exports include DWG, DXF and PDF, which open in Revit or Archicad. Checks for exit clearance and the main walkway re-run after every change.
A scorecard to run on one project
Give every tool you shortlist the same project. Here is a sample.
"A two-story community building of about 1,500 m2 on a 50 x 35 m corner site with 5 m setbacks. A 300-seat hall, a library of 250 m2, four classrooms of 60 m2, a cafe, offices and WCs. Main entrance on the longer street side."
Set three tasks. Make three outside and two inside images from a massing model. Draw a ground-floor and a first-floor plan that meet the program and setbacks. Set up a sheet set of two plans, two elevations and a room schedule.
Mark each tool from 0 to 5 on four things. Fit is how well it suits the stage. Accuracy is the measured error in areas and setbacks. Interoperability means how well a file makes the round trip into Revit or Archicad. Learning time is the fourth. A 5 means usable as delivered, and a 3 means usable after under an hour of correction. A 1 means the idea only, and a 0 means it failed. Run each generative tool three times from a fresh session and keep the middle run. Note the exports, the seat or plan needed and the price on the day.
Choosing for a practice
Use this four-step pilot.
- Pick the stage where the practice loses the most hours.
- Check interoperability first. Export from the tool, open the file in Revit or Archicad, and list what broke. Run the same check on the formats your contractors and consultants use.
- Run one live project with a named owner.
- Measure the hours saved and the errors added, then decide.
Where to start
Start where the practice loses the most hours, and let one live project decide. The tools that earn a place work on your own geometry, inside the platform you already use.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best AI tool for architects?
There is no single one, because the best tool depends on the stage. Tools that render or plan your own geometry inside Revit, Archicad or SketchUp outlast image generators once the work must measure. Score each one on fit, accuracy, file exchange and learning time.
Can AI produce architectural construction documents?
It can draft parts of them. Tools inside Revit, AutoCAD and Archicad now tag, add dimensions, set up sheets and check standards. But coordination between consultants, the details and the professional stamp are still the architect's work.
Do AI architecture tools work with Revit?
Many do, in different ways. Some run inside Revit as add-ins. Some push models into Revit, and some only export images. Test the round trip on a real file before you buy. Export it, open it in your platform and list what broke.
How many architects use AI?
RIBA's AI Report 2026 found that 74% of the practices it surveyed were using AI, up from 59% in 2025. The survey covers UK architecture. Check the sample and the year before you quote any figure on how many firms use AI.
