On February 24, 2024, Qatar Museums launched the first-ever Doha Design Biennale, an event set to redefine the creative landscape of the MENA region. This groundbreaking biennale, held in the vibrant city of Doha, is not just a showcase but a celebration of design excellence and innovation. Among the many highlights, Monet’s participation in its first-ever installation stole the spotlight, creating a sensational buzz in the art and design communities worldwide.

The Doha Design Biennale stands as a landmark event, dedicated to fostering design culture and providing a platform for both regional and international creatives to display their work. It aims to elevate Qatar as a global hub for design, spotlighting the rich and diverse creativity that the MENA region offers. With exhibitions, discussions, and a plethora of engaging activities, the biennale promises to be a melting pot of ideas and inspiration, attracting a global audience to witness the exceptional talents of local and regional designers.

Momental Contemplation: our Installation at the Biennale

We took part in the biennale with the "Momental Contemplation" installation by Juliano Wahab and Serine El Batal captured the essence of introspection through this installation. Set in the historic Msheireb Company House from February 24 to March 30, 2024, this installation transformed repurposed Brazilian Massaranduba wood into a profound symbol of reflection.

The bench, a seemingly simple urban feature, was reimagined as a metaphorical wheel stopper, urging passersby to pause and contemplate the pace of their lives. The charred wood, salvaged from Brazil's train tracks, added layers of history and resilience, while the subtle light emanating from beneath the bench symbolized the enlightening power of introspection. Placed in a location that honours Qatari pioneers, this installation bridged the past with the present, offering a space for thoughtful contemplation amidst the bustling biennale activities.

Our bench echoes the resilience of our forefathers, overcoming hurdles that they had to endure to secure a better future for their families. It tells a story about globalization and sustainable practices rooted in the traditional lifestyle of nomad tribes from the Arabian peninsula. The irregular shapes and crevasses evoke the passing of time, inviting us to contemplate for a moment and reflect on all the achievements that brought us to where we are as individuals, as a nation, and as a community. Having the opportunity to place it in the Msheireb Museum’s Company House has been of tremendous help in developing the narrative around this installation.

Meeting Great Minds

One of the most enriching aspects of the biennale was the opportunity to meet and collaborate with a myriad of talented Arab designers and international speakers. The event served as a convergence point for creative minds from around the world, fostering an environment of collaboration, inspiration, and mutual respect. It was a privilege to engage with such a diverse group of individuals, all united by their passion for design and innovation.

We would like to thank Her Excellency Sheikha Al-Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Fahad AlObaidly, Msheireb Museums, Glenn Adamson, and the Design Doha team for their efforts and contributions towards Design and Culture.

The Doha Design Biennale was a beautiful celebration of creativity, a platform for innovation, and a testament to the rich cultural tapestry of the MENA region. We look forward to a future edition with tech playing a larger role in design.
